Artist Julia Cairns has been using the technique of painting negative space for many years, both in her art and in the many children’s books she has illustrated.
In this class, Julia will demonstrate her specific method of painting negative space step by step and guide you as you learn to ‘think outside the box’. While it may seem confusing at first, it is a way of painting that can become addictive yet is also a great way to enhance the subject of a painting while also improving the composition. You will be using watercolors on watercolor paper.
Julia will encourage you to experiment with bold use of color and explore a new way of thinking and working in watercolor.
This is a class where ‘negative’ thinking is creative and fun!

Artist Bio & Statement:
Julia Cairns began her artistic career in Botswana where she lived for 9 years, painting the flora, fauna and people of the Okavango swamps. Living off the land, she and a girlfriend spent many months painting, writing, and taking photos while living in tents on little islands with Julia’s dog, Nare. During this time, Julia illustrated several series of postage stamps for the country, was commissioned to paint a portrait of the president and also published a line of greeting cards and postcards depicting African life in a whimsical style. Whilst living in the Okavango, Julia met American wildlife biologist John Bulger who was studying baboons for his PhD. John and Julia lived for many years on a small island in the delta before moving to California after they married in 1992.
Julia and John now live in Galisteo, a small village in New Mexico. Julia loves the wide-open spaces and big skies that are reminiscent of Africa. She still paints the Africa she remembers in her own playful, colorful style but is also drawn to the stunning landscapes and animals of the state. Every October, Julia takes part in the annual Galisteo Studio tour. She has traveled to India many times and her current work reflects her time there, although bunnies with clothes on also feature in her more illustrative style!
