Come with curiosity about comics and leave with your own finished mini-comic!
We will begin the day with introductions and a fun group drawing warm up. Then you can choose to create a mind map for your own story idea if you have one already formulated, or opt to participate in a playful technique (devised by the illustrious cartoonist Lynda Barry) to come up with a fresh concept. We will discuss how to find the shape and flow of your story, create memorable characters, script, thumbnail, ink, and color your 8-page mini-comic. At each stage, you will be invited to share your work with the group, and you will receive individualized feedback from your instructor.
You will leave with a strong understanding of the nuts & bolts of crafting sequential art, and with your own hand-made comic book!
Level: All Levels are welcome!
Medium: Drawing for Comics
Supplies: Bring your own materials.
- Pencil
- Eraser
- Ruler
- Drawing pens of varying thicknesses (Maureen recommends Micron pens in different thicknesses)
- Watercolors or other if you’d like to play with color
- Bright white paper that can handle what you plan to throw at it, Maureen has recommendations for those working in dry media or wet media:
– Dry Media (pencil, colored pencil, and/or ink pens): Maureen recommends getting a pad of blank (no grid) 8.5″ x 11″ ClearPrint Design Vellum.
– Wet Media (gouache or watercolor): Maureen recommends a 9×12″ pad of vellum Bristol or mixed media paper. To use the thicker paper, these folks will need to get graphite transfer paper or bring a lightbox. - Scratch paper for rough sketches. (Maureen likes to use Clearprint Design Vellum and recommends the 8.5″ x 11″ by ClearPrint with the 8×8 grid, and/or at least a dozen sheets of letter-sized printer paper, both gridded and plain, for roughs and final art (reproduces well when using pens but not well-suited for finished art if you’re using wet media like watercolor or gouache).

Artist Bio:
Maureen Burdock, MFA, PhD, is the author and illustrator of three (two published and one forthcoming) graphic novels and numerous shorter comics contained in anthologies, including the opening story in Eisner-Award-winning Menopause: A Comic Treatment. Burdock has also published a number of scholarly essays on comics, trauma, and memory. She was born in the Black Forest, Germany, and grew up on a steady diet of fairy tales and children’s books. She moved to the Chicago area with her mother after first grade. She learned English quickly by challenging herself to read all of the children’s books on the shelves of her local public library. Burdock won her first prize for an illustrated short story about two hot dogs who bravely escape from a frying pan…only to be carried off by a stray dog! The award included a personal meeting with a published children’s book author. Burdock knew then that her destiny was to become a writer and illustrator. She lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico, with her wife and boxer dog.
