This class will focus on a 5 step process for painting a compelling color narrative. At first we will recognize aesthetically satisfying light and dark patterns. Then we will allow the underpainting to work with your story, followed by a quick sketch to map out these ideas. Measure and compare relative tone which is value and color. At the end students will learn that detail comes last.
Design principles:
- Rhythm ~ Motion ~ Balance ~ Proportion ~ Emphasis ~ Variety ~ Harmony
2. That value and relative color temperature; two properties of color that most strongly determine a painting’s form.
3. We will understand kinesthetic empathy.
The first 30 minutes will be devoted to an in-depth look at the above topics:
As we paint, we will also explore perceptual response in oil painting landscapes, by understanding color and value triggers, and echoes. Colors can be triggered. We will identify the above design principles in the paintings, to develop a helpful solution checklist. The class goal will be to create interesting paintings; with more effective use of color, value and their echoes to achieve a strong and pleasing visual impact.

Artist Statement:
Richard Guzmán’s painting style has been described as robust, expressionistic, energetic, with sweeping use of color and skillful harmonies. These attributes are born of close observation of subject matter, countless hours of indoor as well as outdoor painting, and a boundless love of the craft.
Mr. Guzmán has instructed for both private and pubic institutions for the past twenty-five years. He brings a wealth of information that includes the history of painting as well as the most recent trends in modern times. Being a strong believer in the craft of painting, he is also skilled in the use of materials, bringing assurance that works are as archival as possible.
“My goals as a painter are to imbue the viewer with a sense of mystery, beauty and timelessness; to give the viewer a time out from the course of day-to-day life,” he remarks.” Mr. Guzmán’s works are collected throughout the U.S. Collectors know him best for his plein air paintings. “I learn something new with each painting in terms of how perception, color theory, and color chemistry work together to provide the viewer with an aesthetic experience.”
Mr. Guzmán grew up in southern New Mexico and now resides in the northern New Mexico village of Truchas, with his wife Dolores. “There is always, always something to paint in and about this mountain village. My family, friends and subject matter are here. I feel very fortunate to have this opportunity.”
Mr. Guzmán acquired his degree from the College of Santa Fe, primarily to become conversant in contemporary mainstream topics. Then, on to outdoor painting on-the-job training. Painting is always the subject du jour.
